Librarian in the Lobby: Creative Outreach to Faculty and Students in Their Space
Lee Pedersen, Chemistry, Scholarly Resources Librarian – Physical Sciences, Brown University

In April 2005, the new physical sciences librarian at Brown University had a problem – how to introduce herself to, connect with, and provide a visible library presence for her subject communities. Averse to cold calls on faculty, finding high barriers to getting into physical sciences classes, invisible in the Sciences Library except when at the reference desk, a new approach to services others had called "mobile librarian" and remove or onsite reference was proposed and piloted. This talk will discuss how the service, Librarian in the Lobby, was conceived, implemented, and expanded and is headed for its 5th anniversary. Data collected continuously will be summarized and conclusions will be drawn about the impact of what is more than a reference service.
