Summer Reading Program Poem and Song
Barb Ballou offers a poem and song to energize your summer reading program!
Evaluations from libraries that received a Kids, Books and the Arts grant are due to me at the State Library by Friday, August 28, 2009. If you cannot find your evaluation form, please contact me and I will email you a copy. Libraries that do not return a completed evaluation form will be ineligible to receive a Kids, Books and the Arts grant in 2010. Thanks for your cooperation.
Some of you have asked me what next year's summer reading program theme is. Because CHILIS has joined the Collaborative Summer Library Program, you can find information about future programs along with other topics on its website at http://www.cslpreads.org/
For 2010: The Children's slogan is Make a Splash - READ / The Young Adult slogan is Make Waves at your library - READ / The general theme for both programs is 'water'.
Thanks,

CHILIS members vote to join CSLP
CHILIS members voted (91 to 25) at the Spring Conference to join the Collaborative Summer Library Program, effective 2010, for a two-year commitment. For information about upcoming CSLP programs, including the theme and slogans for 2010, please visit http://www.cslpreads.org/upcoming.htm
Editor's note: One of the disadvantages mentioned in the discussion that took place before the vote was that CHILIS members have not been sharing the program workload, leaving it to the same people to work hard every year to put it together. If you are mourning the loss of our unique New Hampshire Summer Reading Program, consider getting actively involved. One comment made over and over was that the CSLP is cheap and easy. To that, I say- so is Kool-Aid!

Presenters for Children Directory
I recently updated the Presenters for Children directory on the state library website at http://www.nh.gov/nhsl/services/librarians/youth_services.html
This directory offers a list of presenters available to perform for young audiences in NH public libraries. If you know of a presenter not currently listed in the directory, please send me his/her contact information.
My apologies also go to Carol Sanborn, a puppeteer from North Hampton. She was inadvertently omitted in the last version of the directory, but her listing-- under Carol and Crew-- has been re-added to this most recent directory.
I hope you are all enjoying the summer.
Best wishes,
Ann

2009 Great Web Site for Kids
The Great Web Sites for Kids committee has selected 19 sites as a 2009 Great Web Site for Kids. These sites have been added to the Great Web Sites for Kids page. See the annotated list below, or go to the website: http://www.ala.org/greatsites. Great Web Sites for Kids are those considered the best web sites for ages birth to 14, outstanding in both content and conception. As applied to web sites for young people, "great" should be thought to include sites of especially commendable quality, sites that reflect and encourage young people's interests in exemplary ways.

Kids Bowl Free!
Just wanted to pass this on in case anyone hadn't heard about it. One of my library families passed this on so I could give this information out to Summer Reading kids or patrons: http://www.kidsbowlfree.com
The above site has all the information for kids to bowl for free. There are two bowling alleys in NH that are participating- one in Keene and one in Manchester.

At the recent conference, Chris Tarrio passed out a sheet listing all the images available at the Bedford Library, and they include a popsicle, sailboat, seashell and many other relevant SRP images.
Ingalls Memorial Library/Rindge has an Accu Cut Machine. Dies that would work for Summer Reading are: Camera, Frog, Turtle, (4 from one piece of 8x11), Butterfly Bookmark (2 from one piece of 8x11.) They have others, too, that possibly could work. Anyone is welcome to come use their machine, just bring your own paper. Give them a call, 899-3303, to let them know when you would like to come. Their hours are: Mon., Wed., Fri. 10-5; Tues. & Thurs. 2:30-8 PM; Sat. 9-12
Here is a list of dies that several libraries are willing to lend via van to other libraries. Please note: these are NOT the CHILIS-owned die cuts that must be used at the three locations where CHILIS owns machines. If you have any questions about this loan program, please contact the library that owns the die-cuts.
Hampton Falls Free Library's list is available, and Seabrook Public Library also has an extensive list.
If you would like to go to any of these libraries to use their machine, please call ahead and also, please bring your own paper.

NHLA Membership has added YALS Section
Many of you may have recently received your NHLA renewal membership form, or an invitation to join NHLA as a new member. You may not be aware that this fall YALS became an official section of NHLA and as a result is now on your membership application. This section supports those serving young adults in NH libraries, including librarians, library assistants, and administration. We meet four times a year to support and promote library services for young adults throughout the state of New Hampshire. The foundation of YALS meetings is the free exchange of ideas with an optimistic and can-do attitude. Even if you are not able to attend the quarterly network meetings there are many ways you can be involved and/or benefit from this membership. Service to young adults is one of the fastest growing areas in libraries today. For many small libraries that don't have a dedicated young adult librarian this is a great way to gain knowledge and ideas about how to best serve this population for little or no money.
If you would like more information about this section please visit our website: http://www.nashualibrary.org/YALS
Thank you for your consideration,
