Summer Reading Program Info. for 2010

The 2010 theme is 'water'. The Children's slogan for the upcoming year is "Make a Splash - READ"; and the Young Adult slogan is "Make Waves at your library - READ". For information about upcoming CSLP programs for 2010, please visit http://www.cslpreads.org/programs/upcoming-programs.htm

Order early to ensure timely shipping and full product selection. Orders received by the December 1 deadline will be delivered to you by March 8, 2010. More information about products and deadlines can be found at http://www.highsmith.com/cslp

Remember, there is FREE shipping (even for multiple orders), compliments of the CSLP. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me. Ordered items will be sent to you directly from the vendor (not on the van). No Summer Reading items will be distributed/ sold at the CHILIS Spring Conference.

The three DVDs that you received with the summer reading manuals are all identical. They each contain the materials for all three programs. This is done so that libraries that have multiple librarians involved with the summer reading programs can each have access to all of the materials. I guess we can all dream of well-staffed libraries!

Preschool Services Discussion Group - Special Needs Presenter

If you are going to do special needs programming in your library, your staff may find this resource useful. My library has put together a customer service resource primarily for library staff to help them serve individuals with autism and their families more effectively. It includes a training video and numerous other resources, such as book lists and resources for families dealing with autism. Free non-commercial use of any of these materials is permitted and encouraged to support autism awareness.

The Libri Foundation is currently accepting applications for its 2010 BOOKS FOR CHILDREN grants

The Libri Foundation is a nationwide non-profit organization which donates new, quality, hardcover children's books to small, rural public libraries throughout the United States. In order to encourage and reward local support of libraries, The Libri Foundation will match any amount of money raised by your local sponsors from $50 to $350 on a 2-to-1 ratio. Thus, a library can receive up to $1,050 worth of new children's books. After a library receives a grant, local sponsors (such as formal or informal Friends groups, civic or social organizations, local businesses, etc.) have four months, or longer if necessary, to raise their matching funds.

Libraries are qualified on an individual basis. In general, county libraries should serve a population under 16,000 and town libraries should serve a population under 10,000 (usually under 5,000). Libraries should be in a rural area, have a limited operating budget, and an active children's department.

Please note: Rural is usually considered to be at least 30 miles from a city with a population over 40,000. Town libraries with total operating budgets over $150,000 and county libraries with total operating budgets over $350,000 are rarely given grants. Previous BOOKS FOR CHILDREN grant recipients are eligible to apply for another grant three years after the receipt of their last grant. Libraries that do not fulfill all grant requirements, including the final report, may not apply for another grant.

Application deadlines for 2010 are: (postmarked by) January 23rd (extended), April 15th, and August 15th. Grants are awarded January 31st, April 30th, and August 31st. Application guidelines and forms may be downloaded from the Foundation's website at: www.librifoundation.org.

For more information about The Libri Foundation or its Books for Children program, please contact Ms. Barbara J. McKillip, President, The Libri Foundation, PO Box 10246, Eugene, OR 97440. 541-747-9655 (phone); 541-747-4348 (fax); libri@librifoundation.org (email). Normal office hours are: Monday-Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Pacific Time.

Does Your Rural Public Library Need New Children's Books?

The Children's Literacy Foundation (CLiF) is a non-profit organization dedicated to nurturing a love of reading and writing among children throughout New Hampshire and Vermont. CLiF's programs have already touched the lives of many thousands of children across the Twin states.

One of the ways CLiF supports children's literacy is by awarding Rural Library Sponsorships for libraries in towns with less than 5,000 inhabitants. Each sponsorship includes $2,000 worth of new, high-quality, children's books as well as a 45-minute storytelling presentation to all the town's elementary school children at which we deliver all the new books. Please note that libraries are able to choose the books they would like from a list of more than 750 titles.

Most CLiF book delivery celebrations take place at the local elementary school, and we typically have every child in town from Kindergarten to Grade 6 attend these special events. It's a very memorable occasion that rekindles the children's interest in books and reading, and reminds them of the treasures that await them at their local library. Most libraries find that their children's book circulation increases significantly, immediately following a CLiF sponsorship.

If your library is interested in applying, please visit us online at www.clifonline.org to download an application or contact CLiF at (802) 244-0944 and we will be happy to send you one. The deadlines for the application are February 1 and August 1. Each year CLiF sponsors 24 rural public libraries. This sponsorship is completely free for your library!

For more information about CLiF's Rural Library Sponsorships, please visit us online at www.clifonline.org or contact us with any questions (802) 244-0944.

Storytime for Children with Special Needs

On the PUBYAC listserv, one librarian shared a blog entry that details the whys and hows of doing a storytime for children with special needs. Because we have addressed this issue recently at a CHILIS Conference, I thought you might find her blog entry helpful. Part three of the entry includes a specific format/ plan for a storytime geared to children with special needs (particularly those on the autism spectrum.)

Presenters for Children Directory

I recently updated the Presenters for Children directory on the state library website at http://www.nh.gov/nhsl/services/librarians/youth_services.html

This directory offers a list of presenters available to perform for young audiences in NH public libraries. If you know of a presenter not currently listed in the directory, please send me his/ her contact information.

My apologies also go to Carol Sanborn, a puppeteer from North Hampton. She was inadvertently omitted in the last version of the directory, but her listing-- under 'Carol and Crew'-- has been re-added to this most recent directory.

Accu-Cut Dies

CHILIS owns three Accucut machines, which are currently housed at the following locations: Bedford Public Library, Franklin Public Library, and the Weeks Memorial Library in Lancaster. Die cuts of various themes are available at each location (the same die cuts are available at each library). As the machines are too delicate to travel via the van, they must stay at the host library and be available to anyone coming to use them during the library's operating hours. If you wish to use the machines and die cuts, please make arrangements with the host library to visit and please bring along your own paper. Here is a list of the die cuts available: CHILISaccucutdies.doc

Ingalls Memorial Library/Rindge has an Accu Cut Machine. Anyone is welcome to come use their machine, just bring your own paper. Give them a call, 899-3303, to let them know when you would like to come. Their hours are: Mon., Wed., Fri. 10-5; Tues. & Thurs. 2:30-8 PM; Sat. 9-12

Here is a list of dies that several libraries are willing to lend via van to other libraries. Please note: these are NOT the CHILIS-owned die cuts that must be used at the three locations where CHILIS owns machines. If you have any questions about this loan program, please contact the library that owns the die-cuts.

Hampton Falls Free Library's list is available, and Seabrook Public Library also has an extensive list.

If you would like to go to any of these libraries to use their machine, please call ahead and please bring your own paper.

Isinglass Teen Read Award

The 2009 winner was "Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie" by Jordan Sonnenblick. This award, geared for readers in grades 7 & 8, chooses twenty titles yearly from student recommendations. We are always looking for a wide range of recommendations from kids around the state. If you have a book that your middle grade readers are raving about, please send the title to blibrary@metrocast.net. For all the forms, bookmarks, and the current list of titles go to www.barringtonlibrary.com and click on the Teen Zone button.

The committee is always looking for new members to read and review recommended titles. If you are interested in joining the committee, please contact me at above email address. Members can attend meetings in the seacoast area Sept.- April, or may participate through sending e-mail reviews of items, should driving distance be an issue.

Flume Award Nominations Need Readers for 2011

Once again the Flume Committee is enlisting the help of NH librarians who are willing to read some of the titles nominated for next year's Flume Award list of 13. The nominated titles are on a wiki so that you can see the list, choose the titles you would like to read, and then add your comments. Here's the link: http://flumeaward.wikispaces.com/

We appreciate comments about all of the books on the list, but those without readers are especially in need of attention. The wiki is easy to use as a discussion tool. You don't need to sign in, although you are welcome to join the wiki if you wish. Just click on a title, which will take you to the discussion page for that book. Click the "Edit this page" tab and then begin typing your comments. After you are done writing, click the "Save" tab. That's it!

The Flume Committee really depends on all of you to help choose the final 13 titles for the list. Please check the page frequently, as the Flume Committee may post information on the wiki. You also may want to comment on some of your colleagues' reviews of the books under discussion. The final list will be chosen in April, so please post your comments on the nominated titles by March 31, 2010.

Thank you for all of your help with this award!

Ann

PS. I know this is also happening at the same time that you are promoting this year's voting for the 2010 Flume Award. Voting information will be available in March and voting for the award will take place during the month of April. Thank you for all that you do to promote this award to high school students.

Order Great Stone Face Award Materials

Do you have some original ideas for using/ promoting the Great Stone Face books in your classroom or library? We'd love to hear them! The Great Stone Face Committee of CHILIS will gather your suggestions, and produce a brochure/ website article to offer as a resource to interested teachers and librarians. Please send your ideas to Sarah Hydorn at shydorn@hotmail.com

Nancy Keane, media specialist at Rundlett Middle School in Concord, has put together the GSF booktalks on her website, along with podcasts. She is still working on the Isinglass nominees and will be finishing those next. Not all booktalks are available, so if anyone has any of the ones she is missing, she'd love to use them.

You can order GSF materials by using the order form on the CHILIS website. Please remember to send a check with your order payable to CHILIS. Please note that the double-sided bookmarks are sold out. However, the single-sided ones are still available.

Luci Albertson (Bedford) and Sarah Hydorn (Dover) are taking over as co-chairs from Adele Boeske, who had been chairing the Great Stone Face for many years. Thank you, Adele, for all your hard work and dedication!

The GSF committee is always looking for librarians and teachers to read a lot of books! They meet at the Bedford Public Library on the 2nd Friday of the month (September - April, no meeting in December) from 1-4pm. If you would like to read and recommend titles but cannot attend the meetings, you can still participate.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS

Seabrook Library invites you to jump into The Listening Pond!

The Seabrook Library invites you to jump into The Listening Pond! The children's area now boasts an amazing instant story time device. It will play CDs and cassettes, music or audiobooks for up to SIX children at a time. Each listener will have not only their own headphones but their own volume knob as well (very important with siblings!). Comfy brightly-colored caterpillars provide a place to sit. Picture books with tapes or CDs are on a rack at The Listening Pond, but don't stop there-- just a few feet away is a section of longer fiction audiobooks and a shelf of music.

The Listening Pond is available any time the library is open-- wade in, pull up a caterpillar and listen! Six children used it within the first four hours! You should have seen the happy moms of the three boys who actually sat quietly (and without fighting over the book!) through "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs". (I told them it was actually for the parents...)

Take care,
