ALA Provides Free National Gaming Day @ Your Library Activity Resources
Can your patrons outwit other library gamers? Hundreds of libraries across the country are preparing to celebrate the American Library Association's (ALA) first annual National Gaming Day @ your library on Nov. 15, 2008. ALA invites libraries of all types to join in the celebration by registering for two national gaming activities: a national video game tournament and board game challenge. Libraries also can develop their own National Gaming Day activities by using free resources from the ALA Gaming Resources Web site at http://gaming.ala.org/resources.
The national videogame tournament uses a GT System http://gtsystem.org/ , a free service of the Ann Arbor (MI) District Library that provides web-based tools for running tournaments for players of any age or experience level. On National Gaming Day, library gamers will be able to see how they rank on local, regional, and national leader boards.
In addition, libraries will try to set a record for the most number of people playing a board game at the same time. Through a generous donation from Hasbro, every public library branch in the U.S. will receive a free copy of "Pictureka" <http://host.exemplum.com/hasbro/pictureka!/pictureka.html> !," a frenzied version of finder's keeper's. Hasbro will ship the games in late October. Libraries interested in participating in either activity and receiving additional products are encouraged to register at http://icanhaz.com/ngd.
The ALA will offer a National Gaming Day @ your library publicity tool kit to help libraries promote their gaming programs and events to the media. The online tool kit, available on October 1, includes downloadable artwork, a customizable postcard, a sample press release, a sample letter to the editor, and much more.
To learn more about National Gaming Day @ your library, or to register for national activities please visit http://gaming.ala.org/resources/index.php?title=Ngd2008.

Baker Free Library Hosts Formal Tea Party
On October 4th, we hired Elizabeth Reese from Concord to facilitate two formal Tea Parties here at the Baker Free Library for girls aged 6-9 and their favorite dolls (12 girls per seating). Elizabeth brought the tablecloths, napkins, china, finger foods, and tea. The library provided tables, chairs, refrigerator, sink, advertising, and registration. Girls and dolls dressed formally for the occasion, and learned about the history of tea, tea etiquette, and table manners at the 1-hour event. They also played a tea memory game, sampled two types of tea and a variety of tea sandwiches, petit fours, and the like. Fancy napkin folding was also planned, but our girls were so interested in the other activities that they never got to those.
Elizabeth offered two price options:
- $300 (for 24 girls) for services mentioned above OR
- $330 (for 24 girls) and included an invitation sent to each girl ahead of time and a group photo afterwards
We chose the option with the invitations and it was a hit. We are still getting comments from the girls and their parents about how much fun they had!
Elizabeth can be reached at 603-228-6505 or via email at elzreese@yahoo.com.
